Messy Little Girl

Messy Little Girl

Mama’s gone shopping,
time to uproot.
Grandma won’t mind
if there’s dirt on the fruit.

Messy little girl,
spits on the soil
plays a crazy game
rolls up roots in a coil.

Who wrote the rules
whence plants must stay;
when there are no friends
who can come and play?

Messy little girl
turned over the pot.
The plant might live
Or perhaps, it might not.

About zongrik

For those of you who do not know the handle "zongrik," that would be Bat-Ami Gordin. Most people call me "Tammy." Bat-Ami means "daughter of my nation" in Hebrew. It's a heavy name to carry around. I answer to either name. I also answer to "mama." Some Basic Things about me: Animal lover, mom, poet/writer, dramatic soprano, photographer, teacher/tutor, CERT/Technician and, oh yeah, aerospace engineer. I consider myself "The Astro-Poet." To learn more about the origins of the word "zongrik" see whats-a-zongrik?

  5. This is cute and playful =)

  6. My favourite line “Who wrote the rules whence plants must stay”. This is a wonderful poem, and I simply loved it.

I really like this poem because it reminds me of ME! I was the messy little girl playing with plants and bugs and critters. I was an only child, so most of the time, I was lonely, too, just like her. No one to play with but the plants. Nice poem, Tammy.

    • I really like how you revealed the loneliness thing. I realize that the girl in my poem is alone also. Her mama went shopping and her grandma is supposed to be watching, but we get the sense she’s not there because the poem says she wouldn’t care, not that she didn’t care. So the girl is alone.

      Thanks for the comment.

  8. Great write for the image. Curiosity at it’s best.

  9. Yes i like this very much too. lol behind the moms bak was that you? that liked to get her hands in the dirt but moms like to wipe them clean grandma’z on other hand have been there done that & realize a little dirt can mean hours of pleasure for a wee child curiousity is good for the mind & grandma has better things to do with her time then be stressing out about dirty hands & clothes etc lol lol poor new moms so concerned about what people think & germs poor kids dont get to be with grandmother near enough lol lol well thought out poem that ticked all the fears the fun the memories of being a kid & so much more .. bz :))

  14. This was very cute. Loved the rhyme. You did a great job of responding to the photo prompt.

  15. it is a cute verse…and you know i am sad for her that friends cant play…and messy kids are not a bad thing you know…

  16. Nice..I love messy kids…it means they are being kids and having fun!

  17. One is only a child once; and she meant the plant no harm!! Very, very cute!

  18. I’m thinking a bit of deja-vu and then I saw it was posted earlier. Just delightful.

  19. Getting messy is just part of the joy of being a kid. Very cute poem!

  20. Really well done. I used to love making messes as a kid, well, I guess part of me still does too. Very nice. Thanks

  21. Sweet. Reminiscent of a nursery rhyme.

  22. Oh, what a great rhyme! I can almost see it in a modernist collection of Ms. Goose!

  23. Nice rhyming, a joy to have read

  24. Look at you rhyming away at your bay, very nicely done and was such fun. Kids are great and with my mind I surely can relate..haha

  25. Adorable. Really enjoyed it. Suited the picture very well.

  26. I like this one. It is simple (in a good way) with a nice rhythm and mixed rhyme, almost like a nursery rhyme. It’s something I would enjoy reading to my kids (if I had any), but even for adults, I like this kind of whimsical piece.

  27. I really like it, it is simple and easy yet captures the spirit so well.

  28. smiles..i like..and uprooting is a good thing sometimes

  29. Plants often suffer at the hands of children or pets left alone. I think I did take apart a plant once when I was by myself, but it was something growing wild in the garden. 🙂

  30. Lovely piece, Tammy. Brings back memories of my own childhood and playing alone sometimes in the sandbox. A touch of lonliness here…and how a child deals with that. I liked the playfulness as well.

  31. poemsofhateandhope

This was so cute- and definfately captures the innocent playfullnes of children; albeit as an adult- we might not see that so well when there’s soil everywhere- lovely playful write

  32. I like the playfulness of this one Tammy. It’s fun to read a lighthearted piece every now and again, and I do love when children explore the world around them…very nice.

  33. dirty hands are fun!

  35. An inquisitive nature reveals great intelligence of the little girl, zongrik! A light-hearted verse can be so refreshing!

  36. I can smell the soil on her little fingers and feel the delight of exploration tinged with the sadness of loneliness.

  37. Female version of Calvin.

    I love it.

    • I didn’t see it that way, but you are totally right. It’s an archtype. Dennis the Menace, Huck Finn, Pollyanna, Wendy’s youngest brother John (Peter Pan) and many more…

  38. I, too, know this little good – the payback being I have had a brown thumb since childhood. My one plant that is ever faithful – an aloe that I’ve had now for over forty years. It’s not very green and has at times had to live on air, but it’s still here as am I and I take comfort in that. Liked this whimsical poem a lot.

  39. ehrr that should have been girl not good…can’t even keep my thoughts straight anymore.

  40. Such innocence, wryly and smartly written. Children will play with such curiosity, their mischievousness is charming but you leave open the awareness that child’s play can also be destructive. This is a wise and wonderful write.

  41. Very cool poem and lovely photo. Great title.

  42. Great shot and wonderful poem! Simply lovely!
