Man’yoshu Style Poetry

King Kull Meets Charon at River Styx

Alone, we are statues
who sneer at souls flowing
down a river to hell.
Together, we generate the power
to light a living continent.

About zongrik

For those of you who do not know the handle "zongrik," that would be Bat-Ami Gordin. Most people call me "Tammy." Bat-Ami means "daughter of my nation" in Hebrew. It's a heavy name to carry around. I answer to either name. I also answer to "mama." Some Basic Things about me: Animal lover, mom, poet/writer, dramatic soprano, photographer, teacher/tutor, CERT/Technician and, oh yeah, aerospace engineer. I consider myself "The Astro-Poet." To learn more about the origins of the word "zongrik" see whats-a-zongrik?

  1. I like this a lot…
it is different, and I was struggling with picturing in my mind another form than the love lines I wrote ☺
    Peace,

  2. Yes, alone makes us decorative stones …

  3. Powerful, fierce, philosophic compressed into five short lines. Between the lines, the effect of living without love is to become embittered, and unapproachable. So well said! What a window to that psychology. In an era when we are telling our daughters, that they don’t need a man to be complete comes the other side of the coin. We do need love to keep a firm footing. Excellent writing.

  4. an interesting take on the prompt. as a statue, myself, I can only begin to imagine the power of such a beautiful light.

  5. i like it. We can do so much more when we unify than when we walk alone!

  6. huh def different from the rest….i like fantasy though and that is the genre i feel this in…intersting piece…

  7. Very interesting! Great to have a different take.

  8. Interesting point of view, and interesting picture choice. Strength to overcome monsters found in unity.

  9. Oh! Powerful poem….tanka. It only takes a little to push the imagery to the edge.

You did very well with t his, and it’s haunting…which, in my estimation, makes good poetry, regardless the form.

  10. Yes- there is power in numbers… very moving!

  11. Together we have strength…

  12. together we can do so much we’d never manage alone

  13. So evocative and powerful! A strong poem!

  14. United we stand, divided we fall…

  15. powerful and witty thoughts.

    ode to statues.
    love the contrasting imagery.

  16. watching the world go by and then we unite and to fix it!
